Ibn Manẓūr said: “Al-nidāʾ (النِّداء) and al-nudāʾ (النُّداء) mean ‘the voice’ or ‘the call,’ similar to supplication (duʿāʾ) or bleating (ruġāʾ). One may say: nādāhu or nādā bihi (‘he called him’), and also: nādāhu munādāh and nidāʾ, meaning ‘he cried out to him’… Al-nidāʾ, in its extended form, denotes supplication in a loud voice. One may say: nādaituhu nidāʾan (‘I called him with a cry’).”
