Abstract

       The civilizations of Sumer and Akkad were pioneers among ancient civilizations, as they contemplated the universe, their place within it, and conceived of the Earth as a hemisphere floating on the surrounding ocean. Sociological researchers have confirmed that Egypt was among the earliest nations to develop principles related to surveying and measurement, as ancient Egyptian maps dating back to the reign of Ramses II (circa 1300 B.C.) have been discovered.
