Abstract

The El Cid epic is considered the foundation upon which medieval Spanish literature was built, being the oldest complete Spanish epic text written in Castilian (Old Spanish). It set a different standard from contemporary European epics by adopting narrative realism instead of resorting to fantastical elements. It depicted the social and political conditions in 11th-century Spain, highlighting the complex relationship between the individual and authority
