Iraq is considered one of the oldest centers of human civilization, where great civilizations such as Sumer, Akkad, Babylon, and Assyria emerged and contributed to the foundations of science, arts, and political and social organization in history. Iraqi antiquities represent a living cultural record that reflects humanity’s journey and creativity, and they constitute an important part of Arab cultural identity. During the twentieth century, this heritage passed through contrasting stages of scientific discovery and prosperity on the one hand, and deterioration and looting caused by wars and political instability on the other.
